The History of Jet Line in a few Pictures. The "Enlargement" Exhibition at the Palace of Culture and Science
It was the only such realization. Never before and never after did such actions take place on the Palace of Culture.
On a gloomy day in early October 2002, four black and white photographs appeared on the building of the Palace of Culture and Science.
This heralded the exhibition "Enlargement. Photographs in Times of Turmoil" prepared by the artistic, photographic coalition Latarnik.
The rest of the exhibition was in one of the palace halls.
Photographers
The originator and curator of the exhibition was Juliusz Sokołowski, the author of one of the large-format photos on the Palace of Culture and Science facade, the one with the building from Ołowianka Island. Do you remember the others?
Jakub Pajewski is the author of the photo of a woman's back line - it was hung on the side of Marszałkowska Street.
Andrzej Georgiew was the author of the portrait of actor Rafał Mohr displayed on the western facade, from Emilii Plater Street.
Paweł Żak is the author of the plant photo on the northern facade, from Świętokrzyska Street.
I Don't Want that Face Looking at Me!
I remember this exhibition very well myself, it's a bit funny but I was working at the Palace of Culture and Science at the time. For all of us involved in promoting the Palace then, it was an event from another universe. Warsaw was left breathless: how come? What is it? Why at all, what does it mean? Some loved it, others hated it. There were phone calls: I don't want that face looking at me! They were referring to the portrait of Rafał Mohr, which was created by the excellent Andrzej Georgiew.
You might remember: some time ago, large-format decorations appeared on the Palace of Culture and Science facade, and probably about 95% of them were installed by Jet Line crews (the WOŚP banner was displayed the longest and most frequently). But as I wrote above, "Enlargement" was one of a kind.
Each of these photos was 1,200 square meters, each weighing over half a ton. For this particular project, the Jet Line team first documented all sides of the Palace of Culture and Science facade and installed a suspension system, and then hauled up four decorations. For several days they hung rolled up, waiting for the opening day to unveil simultaneously, at the same time.
Yes, it wasn't without adventures, which now, after almost 22 years, we can laugh about. Back then, not so much... But that will remain in our archive, the internal one, between people and events.
