On Jet Line Screens: Photographs by Eugeniusz Lokajski “"Brok"”
Eugeniusz Lokajski, "Brok “, an athlete and Olympian, Home Army soldier, lieutenant in the Warsaw Uprising, first a liaison officer of the "Koszta" company”, then its commander. On September 25, 1944, he was assigned to the Home Army Headquarters to photograph insurgents so they could more easily leave the city with fake documents in case of the uprising's capitulation.
Did he go straight to the photo shop at 129 Marszałkowska Street to buy films and chemicals? That day, the building housing the shop was bombed. 36-year-old Eugeniusz Lokajski died under the rubble.
"Brok" documented the uprising from August 1 to September 25. He took photos with a Leica, whose shutter mechanism, improved several years before the war, is considered the beginning of photojournalism. His photos are priceless and numbered from 1 to 840 form the foundation of the treasure that is the Warsaw Uprising Museum archive.
We selected 44 photographs by "Brok “. From August 2 to October 3, we will display them on MORE screens in our Digital OOH network in Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Tri-City, Poznań, Katowice, and GOP cities.
You will see people in them: soldiers and prisoners of war, insurgents and civilians, children and adults, women and men. We believe that in these photos, the city serves as a stage where people always play the main roles. After all, "it depends on us whether it was worth it”.
In the photo in the spot below: in the foreground on the right: Cpl. Krystyna Galar (née Prasałowska), paramedic "Krystyna “from Battalion "Kiliński”". In the background, the ground floor of the building at 35 Zielna Street, August 20, 1944.
We thank the Warsaw Uprising Museum for their kindness and for providing the photographs.
