Ecology in OOH

Ecology and OOH connect like few other things, but what does ecology in OOH look like? While the MORE screens in Warsaw feature the topic of ecology, environment, and water – I’d like to revisit an article from the beginning of this year. New Marketing asked us in February if and how important environmental actions are to us – personally, as a company, and as an industry. Allow me to return to that publication. What can and does an outdoor company like us do, both internally and externally?

I think this type of list serves two purposes: gathering thoughts and subjecting oneself to criticism. In both cases, it's about reflection, learning, and conclusions.

Energy for Media Carriers

It's true that our media carriers consume electricity, and advertising posters need good lighting. We observe the market, test, and seek the best solutions. We've installed twilight sensors so that lamps react to natural light levels. DOOH screens don't operate around the clock; they work when it makes sense. We also have MobiJets, advertising vehicles that drive in cities, so we take great care of their condition and service them regularly. We also have a neon sign on the roof. We installed it five years ago on the roof of our new office, referencing the tradition and aesthetics of old advertisements in Warsaw. Today's neon signs are made with new technology, and modern fluorescent tubes are among the most energy-efficient current converters.

Posters and What to Do with Them

We know that vinyl posters can pose an environmental problem. We strive to minimize it. The disposal of advertisements printed on vinyl material has been a challenge for our industry for years, and we searched for a partner to help us solve the problem for a very long time. If possible – with the client's consent – we donate some vinyl posters to animal shelters in need. We always remove characteristic fragments (logo, character photo) beforehand. If we don't have consent, we collect the decorations in our warehouse and successively transfer them for disposal to a packaging recovery organization with which we have been working for several years. After being cut and shredded, vinyls are added to fuel in blast furnaces, e.g., in cement plants.

Rebranding

A few years ago, we changed our office, address, and underwent a rebranding. When designing new company materials, we opted out of foils and special finishes on papers, business cards, etc. We use up old printed materials and print all new ones, such as business cards or folders, on recycled paper.

We implemented a certain patent in our company paper bags, because sometimes everyone needs a gift bag. Our bag is branded in such a way that you can easily detach the Jet Line logo (also paper) from the string and reuse the bag from us. If it had a large Jet Line inscription on it, it would probably end up in waste paper (at best). Meanwhile, it can and does continue to serve. Our bags look like this:

Eco-friendly marketing industry (part 2)

The most Eco-Friendly Company Gadgets

We have the most eco-friendly company gadgets because... we don't have any at all. We don't produce gadgets; we consider them unnecessary and prefer to give kindness, remembrance, and experience. So, if we want to give someone a gift, it's usually flowers, a book, theater tickets, or a bottle of wine (in that very bag).

We Cooperate

Whenever possible, we participate in social campaigns or invite inspiring people to cooperate – like Monika and Emilia from "Proste Less Waste “(prostelesswaste.pl). Recently, we showed inspirations on MORE screens in Warsaw that help live more ecologically and healthily, for us and the environment. We supported the campaign "First 24 hours without smog” in November and December 2018, providing Motorway 12x4m surfaces.

For several years, we have been supporting the Fundacja Przytul Psa, which cares for dogs and cats in a shelter near Warsaw, by running a 1% campaign on Motorway billboards. When it became clear that this would be a permanent collaboration, we offered the Foundation to print posters on vinyl material, so they could be used multiple times. We have just reinstalled the graphics that had been waiting in our warehouse since May of last year.

In the Office

For years, we have been segregating waste in the office, washing dishes in the dishwasher, collecting waste paper, and every few years, we order the shredding of documents that cannot be recycled. We get water from the tap with an aerator or from a dispenser (not from large bottles). We do not serve bottled water to our guests.

If we print, it's double-sided. We prefer to receive and send invoices electronically.

We combine needs and delegations: when someone goes to a meeting, for example, in Wrocław, they tell the others about it. Because maybe someone else is planning a trip and it can be combined. Usually, this is exactly what happens, and cars don't drive empty. If one person is going, we always choose the train whenever possible. For years, we have been cooperating with the Association of Disabled People for the Environment EKON. All used and broken electronic equipment, also brought from homes, we hand over to EKON.

Once a year, we organize clothing collections, which we then pass on to good and needy hands.
Blankets, towels, etc., go to animal shelters.

Thanks to Michał, our CEO, who often cycles to work, there is a bike rack in the parking lot under the building. We and any willing cyclist use it.

Education and Foundation

For eight years, we have been running the Fundacja Rejs Odkrywców (Voyage of Discoverers Foundation). We organize voyages on seas and lakes, and in this way, we help young people who need it to find the right path. The voyages are a means to an end, and the goal is to promote, among other things, volunteering. To go on a voyage, our youth volunteer in animal shelters, clean up memorial sites and cemeteries, for example. During preparations, meetings, and discussions, we pay attention to cultural and conscious behavior. To maintaining order in camping sites in Masuria, to how water is used on a sailing ship, etc.
Sailing is nature; you cannot sail without respect for nature. We teach it in practice.
