Increased Traffic on Polish Roads
Once every five years, a General Traffic Measurement study is conducted in Poland. The last such measurements took place in 2015, and last week (April 2016) the first results were published.
Throughout the previous year, traffic was counted on 18,022 km of national roads managed by GDDKiA - resulting in the publication of data, primarily in the form of Average Daily Traffic (ADT), which is the number of vehicles that (on yearly average) travel on a given road section
per day.
After reviewing the initial data, several facts are worth noting:
- the average ADT in 2015 for the entire national road network was 11,178 vehicles/day, 14% higher than in 2010;
- the average ADT in 2015 for international roads (international roads comprise 13 main national roads) was 20,067 vehicles/day, 20% higher than in 2010;
- 2,700 km of roads (mainly highways and expressways) - which is 15% of the entire national road network, carries 40% of all traffic on national roads;
- the construction of bypasses redirects a large portion of urban traffic outside the city, with Warsaw's western bypass being an excellent example, currently one of the most heavily trafficked roads in Poland - in some places ADT exceeds 100,000 vehicles per day;
- Poles are pragmatic and cost-conscious - if there's a good quality road running parallel to a toll highway, it enjoys great popularity - for example, traffic volumes on the A2 motorway and route 92 between Poznań and Września are very similar. Where highways are toll-free, parallel roads have seen very significant drops in traffic volume;
- the highest traffic volumes are in the following voivodeships: Silesian, Lesser Poland, Łódź, Masovian, and Lower Silesian, while the lowest are in Podlaskie and Warmian-Masurian;
- the most heavily trafficked roads in Poland are:
- Route No. 4: Zgorzelec - Wrocław - Katowice - Kraków - Rzeszów - Korczowa
with an annual average of 28,870 vehicles per day, - Route No. 1: Gdańsk - Toruń - Łódź - Częstochowa - Gliwice - Chałupki
26,562 vehicles per day, - Route No. 2: Słubice - Poznań - Warsaw - Terespol
24,031 vehicles per day, - Route No. 8: Budzisko - Białystok - Warsaw - Piotrków Trybunalski - Wrocław - Kudowa Zdrój
21,802 vehicles per day; - Route No. 7: Gdańsk - Warsaw - Radom - Kielce - Kraków - Chyżne
20,596 vehicles per day;
- Route No. 4: Zgorzelec - Wrocław - Katowice - Kraków - Rzeszów - Korczowa
- the share of nighttime traffic in overall traffic volume is decreasing and stands at 12.1% (compared to 13.6% in 2010);
- in 2015, summer traffic was 10.5% higher than average, while winter traffic was 11% lower than average.
How does the Motorway 12×4 m network compare to these figures?
Very well.
The average traffic volume at Motorway network billboards is 25,071 vehicles per day and is 124% higher than the average traffic on national roads.
The average traffic volume for Motorway billboards located along international roads is 27,674 vehicles per day and is 38% higher than the 2015 average.
